Accurate weight data

The weight is calculated with a high degree of accuracy, with the correlation between the cow's weight on the running scale and the weight indicated by the camera being higher than 90% for all breeds.

The cow's weight is recorded after each milking, and the data are stored and presented to the farmer in our CowFIT app.

With daily weighing, you can also calculate weight changes and thus energy balance during a cow's lactation. It is natural for a cow to lose weight in early lactation because it needs to mobilise fat from its body reserves to produce milk, and similarly to gain weight in late lactation to prepare for the next lactation. What is new is that we can now monitor this with automatic and objective recordings every day.

Since changes in diet directly influence cow weight, the data enables you to quickly adjust energy concentration or feed amounts when weight levels are too high or too low. You can monitor individual cows or groups by parity and lactation stage, track herd-level trends, and collaborate  effectively with nutritionists, veterinarians, and advisors. With continuous insights at your fingertips, CowFIT helps optimise the profitability of your dairy business.

 

How does CowFIT work?

The 3D camera and the ear tag reader are installed in the area where cows pass by one by one on their way in or out of the milking area. The ear tag is scanned to register the cow’s ID, and the camera takes pictures of the cow’s back to record its distinct body shape. Using deep learning and artificial intelligence, each cow’s weight is identified from pictures of its back. The data from all the cows is recorded and stored in the cloud. The results are presented in flexible dashboards and reports available for you online.

WE CAN SAY

  • What a cow weights on a specific day
  • How much weight a cow loses in early lactation
  • When a cow reaches a positive energy balance after calving
  • How much a cow gains weight in late lactation
  • How much a cow changes its weight during the dry period

Analyses of CowFIT data generally show that close attention must be paid to changes in cow weight during the dry period. Ideally, it should be around 0 kg or slightly positive. If cows lose weight, this has a major impact on production in the subsequent lactation – up to 5-7% lost yield.  If they gain too much weight, problems with ketosis, milk fever and the like may arise. 

Experience through data also shows that cows that are inseminated for the first time after calving while they are in negative energy balance generally have poorer reproductive results than cows that are inseminated for the first time when they are in positive energy balance.
